Achieving your Learners Permit

There are three main steps you must go through in order to achieve your Full Irish Driving Licence, beginning with the Driver Theory Test. You can read through these steps below...

1. Driver Theory Test

Your first port of call is to apply for and pass your Driver Theory Test. This is a multiple choice test done through a computer at one of the nationwide Theory Test centers. You can get a list of all the questions in the Official Driving Theory Test book or CD-Rom available from any good bookshop. To apply for the theory test you need to contact Driver Theory Testing Services.

Please note that applications require your PPS number, and you will also need your credit card if you want to apply online or book over the phone.

2. Learner's Permit

Once you have passed your theory test you can apply for your Learner’s Permit (previously called a 'Provisional'). You will need to hold this to drive on the road. You make the application to your local Motor Taxation Office. You can get the application form from your local Garda station, library or motor taxation office. This form is not available to download because it contains a sticky label.

Your application will include your

  • Theory Test Pass Certificate
  • The Fee (€15)
  • Completed application form
  • Eyesight report (Form D502) from your GP or your optician
  • Medical report (Form D501) (if applicable).

3. Driving Test

Once you feel your driving is up to a competent standard then it's time to apply for your driving test.

There are a number of ways in which to apply...

  • Apply online at www.drivingtest.ie or
  • Pick up the application form from your local Garda station or library.

The waiting time for a driving test is approximately 8 to 12 weeks depending on the area you are based in. You can check the waiting times, locations and pass rates of different test centers online www.drivingtest.ie
When you get your test date, be sure to book your pre-test course early with North West School of Motoring to ensure availability.
